Bathroom Layout Calculator

Enter your bathroom size with the sliders; the shower or bathtub, washbasin, WC and a 90 cm door are placed on a scaled plan, and the clearances in front of fixtures and the regulation minimum are checked.

Sizes are clear dimensions between wall surfaces. The shower or bathtub is fixed in the top left corner; the tool finds where the washbasin, WC and door go.

Sources: Article 29 (minimum area and short side) and Article 39/1-c (90 cm clear door) of the Planned Areas Zoning Regulation; the NKBA bathroom planning guidelines in the US for clearances around fixtures (not a regulatory requirement in Turkey); and one manufacturer’s (Creavit) product sizes for the WC and basin depth. The tool places the shower or bathtub in the top left corner, and other layouts may fit. Plumbing position, disabled access, outward-opening doors and sliding doors are not covered. The result shows the general rule, and your municipality’s zoning status and your project’s own conditions can change it. For a binding answer ask the municipality and an architect.

Layout

Will a shower and washbasin fit in my bathroom?

The information on this page applies to Turkey. Under Article 29 of the Planned Areas Zoning Regulation, a bathroom or washing area must be at least 3.00 m² with a short side of at least 1.50 m. That is only the lower limit, and the regulation does not say what fits inside or how. Common sizes of shower enclosures, bathtubs, washbasins and WCs, and the space to leave in front of them, are gathered in our article on bathroom and wet area sizes.

This tool takes the clear width and length of the bathroom and places the shower or bathtub, washbasin, WC and door on a scaled plan. It checks the space in front of and beside each fixture, whether the door leaf hits anything, and the regulation minimum.

How the tool places fixtures

The shower or bathtub goes in the top left corner, and the tool tries both orientations. The washbasin goes on one of the walls next to that corner, and the WC and door go on the walls that remain. The door is 90 cm clear (Article 39/1-c of Turkey's Planned Areas Zoning Regulation) and opens inward; its leaf must not hit any fixture.

Clearances come from the NKBA bathroom planning guidelines in the US: 76 cm in front of every fixture, 46 cm either side of the WC centreline and 51 cm either side of the basin centreline are recommended. If these do not fit, minimum values are tried: 53 cm in front of fixtures, 61 cm in front of the shower entry, 38 cm either side of the WC and basin centrelines. NKBA is not a regulation in Turkey; the tool uses it as a sizing recommendation.

Other layouts may fit. A does-not-fit result means there is no room for this layout, with the shower in the corner, together with its door; it does not mean there is no solution for your bathroom.

Where the sizes come from

The 36 × 65 cm WC and the basin depth (38 cm for a 45 cm basin, 46 cm for a 60 cm basin) are sizes from one manufacturer's (Creavit) product pages; the shower, bathtub and basin widths come from our article on bathroom and wet area sizes. If the product you choose has a different size, the result can change. Plumbing position, disabled access, outward-opening and sliding doors are not covered.

The regulation minimum and the layout are separate questions

3.00 m² and 1.50 m are the legal lower limits. The layout result shows whether the fixtures you chose fit together with the door. One can be met while the other is not, so the tool shows them separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum size of a bathroom?

Under Article 29 of the Planned Areas Zoning Regulation, a bathroom or washing area must be at least 3.00 m² with a short side of at least 1.50 m. In a home with three rooms or fewer, the bathroom and the WC can be combined.

How much space should be left in front of a shower enclosure?

In our article we recommend free space equal to the enclosure width so the door can open fully; sliding doors need less. The NKBA guidelines in the US require at least 61 cm in front of the shower entry and recommend 76 cm. The tool tries 76 cm first and 61 cm if that does not fit.

How much space should there be in front of a WC?

A floor-standing WC is about 60-65 cm deep (60.2 and 65 cm in two models from one manufacturer). In our article we recommend at least 60 cm of free space in front of it. The NKBA guidelines in the US require at least 53 cm and recommend 76 cm, and they ask for at least 38 cm, preferably 46 cm, from the WC centreline to a side wall or fixture.

In a small bathroom, does a shower or a bathtub free up more space?

A bathtub is 150-170 cm long and about 70 cm wide. A shower enclosure instead of a bathtub gives a noticeably better circulation space in the same area. You can pick each in the tool in turn and compare them on the drawing.
