How is window area determined by room size?

A general architectural rule of thumb suggests that for a room to receive adequate natural light, its window area should be at least roughly 1/8 of its floor area (roughly 12-13%); a range of 15-25% offers a balanced ratio between lighting and heat loss. This tool calculates that ratio from the floor and window areas you enter and shows it proportionally on a square room façade.

This is a natural complement to the Façade Analysis Tool (sun/wind orientation) — how much sun a façade receives matters, but so does how large the window on that façade is, in determining how well-lit the interior is.

What the ratio ranges mean

A ratio below 10% generally means inadequate natural light. The 15-25% range is considered balanced for most residential spaces. 25-35% provides abundant light but can increase the risk of overheating in summer; above 35%, both summer overheating and winter heat loss risks become significant.

The room in the diagram is assumed to be square (representational); real rooms are usually not square — this simplification exists only to make the ratio visually readable, not to serve as a scaled drawing.
