Interior Designer vs. Architect: The Real Difference and Who You Actually Need

"Should I hire an interior designer or an architect?" is a question that confuses most people building a new home or reworking an existing space. Here's what each profession is actually authorized to do — and which one your project needs.

"Should I hire an interior designer or an architect?" is one of the most common points of confusion for anyone building a new home or completely reworking an existing space. The two professions often overlap on the same project, so the confusion is understandable — but there's a clear line between them, especially when it comes to legal authority.

What does an architect do?

An architect is responsible for the building as a whole: positioning the mass according to the plot's zoning status, developing a floor plan that works with the structural system, designing the facade, drawing the architectural project that the building permit is based on, and coordinating with the relevant engineering disciplines (structural, mechanical, electrical). In Turkey, only architects are legally authorized to sign the architectural project submitted for a building permit — this is the single clearest legal distinction between the two professions.

What does an interior designer do?

An interior designer focuses on how the interior is used once the building's shell has already been defined: how well the room layout functions, material and color choices, furniture and lighting plans, the detailing of wet spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, acoustics, and ergonomics. An interior designer works within a space that has already been built — or whose architectural project is already finished — and cannot alter the building's shell or structural system, nor sign the architectural project a building permit is based on.

The core difference in one sentence

An architect designs the building itself and its legal/structural framework; an interior designer designs the living space within that framework. If you're building a home, villa, or commercial building from scratch, the process has to start with an architect, because zoning status, permits, and the structural system are all in play. If you're only renovating the interior of an existing apartment or office — with the structural system and building shell staying as they are — working directly with an interior designer may be enough.

Which project needs which professional?

  • You own land and are building a house or villa from scratch: The process starts with an architect — zoning analysis, architectural project, building permit.
  • You're expanding an existing building or touching its structural system: You'll need an architect again (and a structural engineer if necessary) — this falls under a permit or renovation-permit process.
  • The structural system stays as it is, and you're only renovating the interior (kitchen, bathroom, living room layout, finishes): You can work directly with an interior designer.
  • You're building from scratch and want the interior designed as a cohesive whole with the architecture: Having both disciplines work together in the same office, in the same design language, gives the most consistent result.

Both under one roof at MEEZ Mimarlık

MEEZ Mimarlık doesn't split architectural design and interior design into separate offices — the same team works across every scale, from a building's massing down to a kitchen cabinet module. That means a decision about a facade window and a decision about interior lighting are made with each other in mind from the start, instead of your project being split between two disconnected offices.

Note: This article is intended as general guidance; exactly what scope your project needs (interior only, or architecture included) depends on your plot and the current state of the building. Tell us about your project and let's work out the right starting point together.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I'm building a home from scratch, should I start with an interior designer?

No. If you own land and are building from scratch, the process has to start with an architect — only architects are authorized to carry out the zoning analysis, produce the architectural project, and sign the project the building permit is based on.

Can an interior designer sign the architectural project for a building permit?

No. An interior designer designs the interior once the building shell and structural system have already been determined; in Turkey, only architects are authorized to sign the architectural project a building permit is based on.

If I'm only renovating the interior of my existing apartment, who do I need?

If the structural system and building shell are staying as they are — and you're only updating the kitchen, bathroom, living room layout, or finishes — working directly with an interior designer may be enough.
