Let's plan the right flooring quantity together based on your space's real dimensions and chosen laying patternThis is a rough illustration using a common reference pack-coverage rate for the selected flooring type; actual pack content varies by brand, thickness, and product line. Herringbone/diagonal laying patterns may need a higher waste allowance than this rate.
How is the required flooring quantity calculated?
Flooring quantity is calculated by dividing the area to be covered (m²) by the area a single pack/box covers. A waste allowance of around 10% is typically added to the calculated area for cutting loss, room geometry, and transition profiles.
The tool above uses a common pack-coverage rate for your selected flooring type to show the area with a waste allowance, plus the required number of packs/boxes.
Common pack-coverage rates by flooring type
Laminate flooring boxes typically cover about 2.2 m² per box; solid wood parquet has a slightly lower coverage per box (around 1.8 m²); vinyl/PVC floor tiles are usually sold in larger boxes and can cover about 3.34 m² per box.
This tool uses a common reference rate for each type — actual pack content varies by brand, thickness, and product line.
Why the waste allowance is factored in
Cutting loss at room corners, door thresholds, pipe penetrations, and the laying pattern (straight, brick, herringbone) mean real consumption exceeds the calculated net area. A 10% waste allowance is usually enough for a standard installation; this rate can increase for complex room geometries.

How is the required flooring quantity calculated?
Simple formula: Number of Packs = (Area (m²) × 1.10) ÷ Pack Coverage (m²/pack). For example, a 30 m² room covered with laminate flooring at 2.2 m² per box needs (30 × 1.10) ÷ 2.2 = 15 boxes.
Why do laminate, solid wood and vinyl flooring have different pack-coverage rates?
Laminate flooring boxes typically cover around 2.2 m²; solid wood parquet has slightly less content per box, so coverage is around 1.8 m²; vinyl/PVC tile boxes contain more pieces and can cover around 3.34 m². The exact value depends on the brand.
How does the laying pattern affect the waste allowance?
A straight (parallel) layout produces the least cutting loss; herringbone or diagonal patterns require more cuts and can increase the waste allowance. This tool uses 10% for a standard straight layout.
Does this tool also calculate subfloor preparation (screed, moisture barrier)?
No. The tool only calculates the covering material quantity; subfloor preparation (screed flatness, moisture barrier, thermal insulation) is a separate installation stage that needs to be assessed before laying the floor.
