Source: TS 9111 Turkish Accessibility Standard — maximum 8% slope indoors, ideal 6% outdoors; 5% and below is suitable for any length. Slopes above 5% require a flat landing of at least 1.5 m every 9 meters. Clear width must be at least 90 cm (100 cm in public buildings). Accessibility

How is an accessibility ramp's slope and length calculated?

Turkey's TS 9111 Accessibility Standard defines maximum slope ratios for wheelchair ramps: 8% maximum indoors, 6% ideal outdoors; 5% or less is considered suitable for any length. This tool divides the height difference you need to overcome by your selected slope ratio to calculate the required ramp length (horizontal run).

For slopes above 5%, a flat landing of at least 1.5 m is required every 9 meters; the tool shows how many landings are needed both as a number and in the section drawing.

How the calculation works

Ramp length (meters) = height difference (cm) ÷ slope percentage. For example, overcoming a 60 cm level change with an 8% slope requires a ramp of about 7.5 m; the same change at a 5% slope stretches to 12 m — a gentler slope is more comfortable to use but needs more horizontal space.

If the calculated length exceeds 9 meters, a flat landing of at least 1.5 m must be added between each 9-meter section — a requirement the standard sets so users can rest on long ramps.

What this does not cover

This is a rough illustration based on TS 9111's maximum ratios; requirements such as the ramp's clear width (at least 90 cm, at least 100 cm in public buildings), handrail height, surface finish, and exact landing placement are project-specific and not covered by this tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TS 9111?

TS 9111 is Turkey's national standard defining accessibility requirements for buildings and outdoor spaces, including ramp slope, width, and landing criteria.

What is the maximum ramp slope?

Per TS 9111, a maximum of 8% is recommended indoors and an ideal of 6% outdoors. Slopes of 5% or less are considered suitable for any length and are the most comfortable choice.

When is a landing required?

For slopes above 5%, a flat landing of at least 1.5 m must be added between every 9-meter section of ramp. Slopes of 5% and below are suitable for any length and need no landing.

Does this tool calculate the ramp width?

No. Clear width is a fixed requirement under TS 9111 (at least 90 cm, at least 100 cm in public buildings) and is shown as an information note in this tool, not included in the calculation.
